What to bring on an excursion in Punta Cana

Packing well changes the whole excursion day. The basic rule: light clothing, footwear suited to the activity and as few valuables as possible. In Punta Cana the sun is strong from early morning, so everything you bring should cope with water, sand or dust.

Clothing: light, quick-drying garments in thin cotton or technical fabrics. Add a long-sleeved shirt or a cap for the strongest hours of sun, and dry clothes for the way back. For land activities such as buggies or ATVs, wear clothes you do not mind staining: dust and mud are part of the experience.

Sunscreen: essential, and ideally biodegradable, since in several protected areas and snorkeling stops it is the only type allowed. Apply it before leaving the hotel and reapply during the day. Add sunglasses and lip protection if your skin is sun-sensitive.

Footwear: sandals or shoes that can get wet for beach, natural pool and catamaran days; closed, secure shoes for zipline, horseback riding, nature parks and off-road vehicles. Avoid brand-new or slippery shoes.

Swimsuit and towel: wear your swimsuit from the hotel on sea, beach or cenote excursions; it saves time and avoids improvised changing rooms. A towel is recommended for any water activity; on land excursions you will not need one.

Money: cash in US dollars or Dominican pesos for tips, souvenirs, extra drinks or lockers. Many vendors in rural or beach areas do not accept cards, so do not rely on cards alone. Bring small notes.

Device protection: a waterproof phone case covers most situations, whether on a boat, in natural pools or in caves. If you bring a camera, add a sealed bag. Leave jewellery, watches and unnecessary documents at the hotel; a passport copy and an ID are enough for the day.

By activity: sea and snorkeling (swimsuit, towel, biodegradable sunscreen, waterproof case); buggies and ATVs (clothes that can get dirty, a bandana or goggles for dust, closed shoes); zipline and parks (closed shoes, comfortable clothes, light luggage); culture and history (comfortable walking shoes, cap, water); fishing and catamaran (cap, sun protection, light clothing).
