The best time to visit Punta Cana

Punta Cana has a tropical climate all year round. Average temperatures stay between 26 °C and 31 °C, with mild nights and warm sea water in every month. There is no bad time to travel: there are different seasons, and it helps to know what each one looks like before booking excursions.

December to April is the dry season. It is the most stable period, with less rain, lower humidity and many days of uninterrupted sun. It is also high season: more visitors, higher hotel rates and popular excursions filling up in advance. If you travel in these months, book sea days such as Saona Island or the catamaran early.

May to November is the rainy season. That does not mean full days of rain: showers are usually short, often in the afternoon, and followed by clear skies. The sea stays warm and the landscape is at its greenest. It is also low season, with lower rates, quieter beaches and smaller groups on activities such as buggies, zipline or Scape Park.

September and October are the wettest months of the year and fall within the most active part of the Atlantic hurricane season, which officially runs from June to November. Most trips pass without incident, but it is wise to keep the itinerary flexible and not leave water excursions for your last day.

For excursions, the real difference between seasons is not temperature but sea conditions and rain. Boat trips, snorkeling, parasailing and fishing depend on the day's sea conditions, while land activities such as buggies, ATVs, horseback riding or nature parks are far less affected. If the weather makes a departure unsafe, we reschedule it for another day or cancel the booking at no cost, because we do not ask for advance payment.

Practical advice: place sea excursions in the first days of your stay so you have room to reschedule; start early, when wind and heat are gentler; always bring sunscreen, water and a waterproof phone case; and if you travel in high season, confirm your excursion date before arriving.
